Join the “Association for PHotographic Education” (APHE)

Our profession is evolving rapidly in many ways, and the need to engage with peers across the spectrum of photographic education has never been greater. APHE must respond to these changes and provide a strong membership body for all involved in this fluid, challenging, and essential industry.

For the past six months, we have offered free membership as we began planning the future of the organisation.  We now believe it is time to implement changes that will ensure our continued growth and strengthen our significance.

Our origins were in the Higher Education sector, at a time when stills photography was predominant, and academic positions were permanent and tenured.  While we have always informally included those who fell outside these boundaries, we believe that a more inclusive and forward-thinking approach to membership will benefit our organisation, all our existing and new members, and ultimately our students.

To signal this shift, the “Association for Photography in Higher Education” is becoming the “Association for Photographic Education.” This name change reflects our vision for a community composed of secondary, further, and higher education educators and technicians, united by shared pedagogical and practice-based interests, approaches, and aspirations.

Our new membership options are informed by the following three points.

  1. Membership is shifting from being predominantly institutional to Individual, ensuring that everyone engaged in this profession is welcomed, regardless of their contract type, teaching load, broader professional practice, or institutional policy.

  2. Our students rely on a wide range of support. While teachers, lecturers, tutors, and technicians are predominant, they also benefit from apprenticeship supervisors, mentors, researchers, those in allied disciplines, and individuals responsible for the commissioning and distribution of their work. If you are shaping the future for our students, we want you to feel welcome as a Friend and to share in our future.

  3. We are developing more tier points for our industry and corporate partners, which will soon be listed here in the Organisational category.

We will only use your data as outlined in our Privacy Policy and will retain it for as long as necessary for these purposes. PAYPAL: A Gentle Nudge from Your Volunteer Admin Team

As a volunteer-run association, we rely on systems that keep things simple - for everyone’s sake. That’s why PayPal is our preferred method of payment. It’s quick, secure, and saves us from chasing paperwork when we’d rather be focusing on supporting our members. If you're an individual or student member and your institution has agreed to pay your subscription, but insists on paying us directly (rather than reimbursing you for using PayPal), please ask them to email us directly - we’ll do our best to make suitable arrangements. Thank you for helping us keep things running smoothly.
