In Place of Architecture: Exhibition and Symposium
February 26, 2015
We would like to invite expressions of interest / proposals for a forthcoming curated group exhibition & symposium, to be held at The Bonington Gallery, Nottingham Trent University, in November 2015.
Titled ‘In Place of Architecture’, it will explore the nexus of potential that optical practices afford in extending our interpretation, perception and understanding of the architectural environment, by drawing together the works of contemporary artists whose photographic or filmic practice critically engages the subject and objects of architecture.
While much work enages with architecture-as-such, other practice frames the artist’s engagement with the object/s of architecture in different terms, responding to architectural space through the prism of individual preoccupations, for example with place, dwelling, memory, affect or the psyche. In these practices such preoccupations find expression through the camera’s representations of specific sites, particular orders of architecture or through conscious attention to the singular properties of the unique locus created by camera’s depiction of space.
The proposed show and symposium will take as their object the visions and voices of practitioners, creatively and critically engaged with architecture; providing a platform for practice that engages the transformative properties of the camera.
