This two year full-time programme is equivalent to the first two years of a BA (Hons) degree and responds to the huge demand for still images in contemporary life whilst offering multi-skilling in new media and video technologies. The department’s impressive facilities along with its training in both practical and theoretical aspects of the photographic industry, will ensure your career in photography has a great foundation. The facilities are complemented with two large photographic studios, two darkrooms and a fully-equipped Apple Mac suite. You will be able to develop your skills while learning studio and location techniques to lead you into technical, creative and management roles in the photographic industries.
The overall aim of the Foundation Degree in Photography and Video is to develop technically accomplished practitioners who are visually literate, conceptual, articulate and have a sound understanding of the historical and cultural contexts of the still and moving image.
This course is the natural progression from any Industry facing Foundation Degree. Validated by De Montfort University, this one year full-time ‘top up’ ‘programme (or two years part-time) aims to provide graduates with professional work-ready skills and commercial business knowledge for successful careers in the Creative Industries. The programme will be delivered largely through a ‘project model’ which reflects a modern multi-skilled approach essential to the development of a portfolio, freelance or employed career.
Emphasis will be placed on the development of skills and knowledge enabling individuals to become fully engaged, independent and critical practitioners who have the ability to project manage and understand the entrepreneurial and financial requirements for success within the broad Creative Industries. This will be achieved through significant research to support project proposal, the implementation of business facing strategies to fulfil project realisation and professional development within relevant industries.
We don’t agree that everyone with a mobile phone is now a photographer. That would be like saying anyone who can hold a spanner is a car mechanic! This 2 year part time programme is delivered by highly qualified and industry experienced staff who provide essential skills, knowledge and understanding of photography to support your progress within the creative industries. To achieve this we prepare you to operate both creatively and technically in any number key photographic roles and much of the skillset delivered is transferable. Training you to light a fashion shot on location will allow you to use those skills for a wedding or PR. Asking you to plan an effective approach for a creative still life in the studio will prepare you to work with a client on a commercial product shot. We also recognise the shifting nature of photography and seek to maximise your understanding of social media and your online presence either within the commercial or artistic community.
